Father's name crossed out on birth certificate
« on: Thursday 02 September 10 18:47 BST (UK) »
Hi

I recently picked up a birth certificate for a female ancestor and although I knew that she was illegitimate, I was surprised to find a name in the father name column that had been crossed out.  Next to the first name was a '1' and a '2' was next to the surname.  At the end of the certificate was the following information:
one ae
two ae

Has anyone come accross this before?  Does anyone know what the ae means?  :-\
Allgood, Stokoe, Harland, Downey, Minehan, King, Watts, Stanton, McCarthy, Sullivan, Murray, Mawston, Murphy, Tyson, Salton, Marshall, Bulmer, Garnet, Bowser, Pemberton, Alderman, Shuckburgh, Addison, Sedman, Duck, Ellis, Hart, Richardson, Coverdale and Green amongst others

Timothypickles,
Hi, welcome to RC.

Never seen anything like that before.  It is probably Latin abbreviation for something.  Hope someone else can help with this.

Is it AE in capital letters? If so it usually corresponds to the initials of the registrar making the amendment.

The numbers by the amendments will have been cross-referenced to a separate book setting out the nature of them.

The annotations are part of the system of doing corrections in registers. All corrections of a minor nature occurring at the time of the entry have to be numbered, obviously to prevent someone coming along later and altering an entry. Therefore, in this case, the corrections would have been made at the time it was entered and are  the 1st and 2nd such corrections in the register. The reason for the corrections is written in the margin of the certificate. They are not entered in a separate book.

For errors discovered within a month of the entry being made then the Registrar in the presence of the relevant parties, or in their absence in the presence of the Superintendent Registrar and two other credible witnesses, correct the erroneous entry by entry in the margin, without making any alteration of the original entry, and sign the marginal entry, adding date when the correction was made.
