Kathleen Grogan, born c1871
« on: Friday 03 September 10 03:24 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Kathleen Grogan married in Bristol, England in 1895, aged 21.  Her address at the time of the marriage was a Bristol hotel and family stories say she was definitely Irish born.  The marriage register records her father as John Grogan, miner, deceased.  I cannot find her birth in UKBMDs and she does not appear in any UK census either before or after her marriage.  She had two daughters who were in a Roman Catholic orphanage by 1901 and her husband, Joseph James Onion, was living in London with another woman.  There is no other trace of Kathleen until her death in 1961 in a Bristol care home.

Any suggestions on how I can research her further with this limited information?  Does anyone know if the name Grogan is specific to a particular county?

Tks

Hi Rusty.

Although relating to the 1890s, this site may give you some idea of surname distribution.

Both Kathleen and Grogan are common names in Ireland which won't help. LDS Pilot site lists many of them (searched for a Kathleen Grogan, father John, born 1870-1879)- see here
The 1911 Irish census is free but she not listed (at least not under her married name). Have you tried 1911 English census? We aren't allowed to do searches of it for you due to terms & conditions of the website but you can find uite a bit a information using the search hints here-

Hi,

Tks for the link to LDS pilot site.  That will come in useful for all sorts of enquiries.  I had not realised how common the name was.  I have looked at the index for 1911 census without success for both maiden and married names.  Tks for checking the Irish census.  At least I can eliminate that route.  There was a Kathleen Hogan in 1911 in Bristol listed but another researcher has been down that line and it did not match.  I think a recheck might be prudent just to be quite sure.

Tks again
