Welch
« on: Sunday 05 September 10 17:53 BST (UK) »
Thomas Welch b.1816 and his wife Ellen b.1817 emigrated to America in 1851 with children Patrick b.1841 and Hanora b.1844. Family history has them coming from Waterford. I'm aware of the variant spellings, but in this case I am fairly certain of the spelling as they joined two other WELCH families in the state of Illinois.
Can anyone help---are there parishes where this particular spelling occurs?

Although your family may have used the spelling Welch in records that you've found don't narrow down your searching to only that spelling. Things were very fluid when it came to names and I've seen a person's name 3 or 4 different ways in the same document.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

It's also worth noting that in Co. Waterford and surrounding areas the surname Walsh is actually pronounced Welsh. The spelling could vary depending on who actually wrote the records and how literate the family were at the time.

I Have done a lot of research on my family Walsh in Waterford.  Have a look at Killeagh and Clonpriest area.  Hanora/Honora has come up a lot with my Walsh relatives.
