Brodie Family from Bathgate/Linlithgow
« on: Monday 06 September 10 22:46 BST (UK) »
I’m searching for any information on my great grand parents John Brodie and Margaret McKenzie Easton Weir married January 4, 1880 in the Parish of Morningside (?). They had four daughters including my grandmother Agnes b. 1882 District of Bathgate. John was alive in 1914 when visited by Agnes.

I have found a John Brodie and Margaret McKenzie who had a son David who died in Linlithgow in 1925 age 62. This couple would appear to be a generation earlier than my John Brodie and Margaret McKenzie Easton Weir.

Any leads would be very much appreciated.

It would appear that Margaret died between 1881-1891 and John re-married to Jessie Dunn

1891 for Ballencrieff Bathgate - all born there except where shown otherwise

John Brodie 35 farm servant
Jessie  36 b Denny Stirlingshire

Thank you so much CaroleW (very belatedly, I’m afraid) for all this rich detail.

I naively assumed that RootsWeb would inform me when someone replied to my post (like the Ancestry boards). Then I got busy on other family lines and forgot to check back.  Sorry!

Yes, this is definitely my family – my grandmother, Agnes (Brodie) Dean and her parents, John and Margaret (McKenzie Easton Weir) Brodie.  Margaret died ~1886 when Agnes was 4 (family history)

I was pleasantly surprised to find that John worked on the Ballencrieff Mains farm, which I located on the 1856 Ordinance Survey Map

During WWI, he apparently was the Estate Manager on Glen Lodge(?) a little outside Linlithgow owned by Sir John Eaton(?)

Do you (or any other researcher) have any info on his death or on his parents John Brodie and Agnes McKenzie, born sometime around 1825.

Thanks in advance

Hi Peter

From the information that Carole has already found, have you considered viewing John Brodie's birth cert? He looks to have been born in 1855, the first year of Scottish statutory registration. For one year only the BMDs ran over two pages of the register. For births in 1855, the register entry should include date and place of parents' marriage, where parents were from, their ages, and also how many children they'd had (boys/girls, alive/deceased). It is always a lucky year for documents  :)

Hi Monica,

I’m somewhat new to researching in Scotland.

Any suggestions as to where to view such birth certificates?

Thanks,

Peter
