Broughton, China Dealer
« on: Saturday 11 September 10 15:16 BST (UK) »
I am interested in the Broughtons in Ramsey and Douglas. (My gr grandmother was a Broughton)
I have followed all the Broughtons indexed on the censuses 1841 - 1911 and Manx BMDS on the web.

My ancestor, Joshua Broughton, born Barnodswick, Yorks abt Aug 1838.
In 1861/71 census in England  - stone mason.
in 1881 and later Maughold, China dealer. In 1889 Ramsey index 4 Dale St.

Why the move to the I-o-M?

In the 1851/61/71/81/91 Is Samuel Broughton, Douglas a China Dealer. Shop in Duke St, residence in Eastfield. Later Samuel's son William takes over the business.

Samuel's origin in the censuses is just 'England'. He marries in Staffordshire, but the MCert image is poor. I have a request on Staffs list for a lookup.

Can anyone provide evidence that these 2 families are related? or where Samuel is from?

Any help appreciated.

There is a Will for Samuel in 1903 - if anyone has access.?
What happenned to Joshua's business?
What happenned to Samuels business after William takes over? - he doesnt appear to have anu male heirs.

The refs are obviously from the latest batch of Manx papers digitised by British Libray + Manx Museum - how does one gain access ? -  understood they were only going public when the new iCentre opens in Douglas next year -
any thing with a Manx Connection

The Isle of Man Times and General Advertiser dated Sat 26 May 1900 has an article about William Broughton regarding his bankruptcy and his application for its discharge. It mentions the sum of money he owed his father Samuel and is worth reading for your research.

Thanks for the marriage/death confirmations.
The bankrupcy stuff is interesting, can you give me web links please.

In 1903 Samuel dies, in light of the bankrupcy wonder what the will says!

In 1911 WIlliam is still a CHina Dealer in Douglas, now ion Ths STrand.

In 1901 Joshua is a China Dealer, 4 DAle St, Ramsey
In 1911 he is a retired widower with his daughter and husband (Kelly) in Accrington. The shop - 4 Dale St is now a Bootmaker.

To join the Lancashire County Library
http://www.lancashire.gov.uk/libraries/borrower/join.asp

Lancashire County Library online reference section
http://www.lancashire.gov.uk/onrl/

Click on 19th Century British Library Newspapers, input library card number.

Click on Browse Publications by location, click on box next to England, North West, Douglas. Click on Isle of Man Times.

In the white box on the left hand side next to the word Find: input "william broughton"

It might be worth trying to e-mail the Manx National Heritage to provide a quote for a copy of Samuel's will.

Access to newspaperes - ah I see - I cant acees via Lancs Library - cos I aren't a member of a Lancs library.

SHropshire is a bit backward in this area - a visit to my library is called for - tomorrow I think.
