Birth Stonehouse Devon, c.1856
« on: Friday 28 May 04 10:53 BST (UK) »
8)Harry ANNISS in 1901 claims to be 45, and gives his birthplace as Stonehouse Devon.
Does anyone have access to data in this area? :-[

Here he is on 1881 Census:

   Dwelling:   13 Errington Rd
Census Place:   Paddington, London, Middlesex, England
Source:   PRO Ref RG11    Piece 0009    Folio 83    Page 26
                Marr   Age   Sex
Henry ANNISS   M   26    M
Birthplace    Stone House, Devon, England
   Rel:   Head
   Occ:   Accountant
E.H. ANNISS   M   36    F   London, Middlesex, England
   Rel:   Wife

From the FreeBMD site is the marriage if you order the certificate it will tell you who his father is. I have looked through 1851 Census for Devon but no ANNISS family in Stonehouse.

Marriages Jun 1880
ANNISS  Harry     Marylebone  1a 853
TERRY  Elizabeth Hannah     Marylebone  1a 853

I hope this is of some assistance to you.

Regards
Robert

 :)Brilliant.
Yes I have the freeBMD record and already have the marriage certificate and the certificate for an Ada Anniss who got married same day - both giving Silas R. Anniss as father - but this is not recognised in Silas R.'s (Plympton, Plymouth) family listing! He could have been Plymouth Brethren and perhaps secretive.

But this is great to find Harry in 1881 - it was the Henry vs. Harry that got me. Cannot find Ada yet.

I wish I could find him on the 1861 census.

More details are at

 ;)
Thanks again.

:)Yes, thanks Robert, have got that - as you can see there is no Harry or Ada!

By the way in the 1881 Census for Harry (Henry), his wife E.H. is Elizabeth Hannah. Good to have her age.
But was there no place of birth for her?

Thanks again,
Tony

Hi Tony

His wife's place of biorth is just shown as Middlesex, I checked the address for 1891 but they had moved on.

As regards Silas the PRO have all the records of the Metropolitan Police, they would show when he had children etc. and a lot more besides.

Regards
Robert

 :)Thanks again Robert.

By PRO do you mean Public Record Office? I visited the gov.pro site but to be honest it just made me think of the old type of bureaucracy where information was hidden away and never voluntarily made available.  I eventually found their stuff on the police by using Google. If I could visit their office/library, perhaps I could find something :-\
and then again maybe not!

Will just have to bite the bullet and get the GRO to find Harry's birth cert.  (Have been purchasing a few certificates - reasonably cheap if you have the GRO index number but a bit more expensive without!)

Have you any experience of searching police personnel records?

Thanks for your help. At least I now have his birth place.

Tony

Interesting!
Hi Robert
:) got an email with your message (which is not posted here) Guess you used my email directly. System works nicely but only so far ... since the email I get cannot be replied to.
To reply ... no I'm in Bristol. Get to visit London about once every ten years!
However have found from 'useful links' stream in RootsChat the following address:
http://www.policeorders.co.uk/
which looks promising - but off to see 'Day after tomorow' now.
Regards ;)
