can anybody help me with my brick wall i have been searching my friends family noteyoung but can only get back to a John Noteyoung's marriage in 1886  he died 1921 aged 63yrs middlesbrough i think he may have changed his name as there is no birth for him (the census says he was born middlesbrough/southbank )i have been told the family originated from germany so think the name could be nothjung as jung is german for young this is only a guess .

the info i have found on the nothjungs up to now is as follows

John Nothjung born 1858 mar qtr stockton but i also found a death same date same name so think this child died at birth (it of course could be the father but there is no age )
Christian Nothjung 1862 mar qtr stockton cant find no more info on him
Peter Northjung 1858 dec qtr stockton
any ideas what to do next

In the 1861 census i found
John Nothwang(the original does look like nothjung )born 1825 germany
eliza wife born darlington 1835
faith daughter born 1856 middlesbrough (cant find any info on this person )
Peter son 1859 middlesbrough
all living in middlesbrough
bullock,temke,turner,haddlington,richards,rollinson,batey,cameron

Hi Cath,

I believe that the family you found in 1861 is called Knocshaw in 1871, and there's a son John age 9 (this ties in with John's age in 1891). Census reference RG10/4895 3 6

hi Tati
i noticed that family as well it was the surname that threw me although i cant find that family from 1871 in any other census so wonder if it is them but they gave a false name
i also have found the death of a
John Nothyung 1871 stockton which is the same registration district as the 1871 family Knocshaw

The John Noteyoung you mention was my great grandfather. I have a family history, previously done that goes back to 1851. I'm guessing that I may be related to your friend thats asked you to research this, so I can probably help. The first we know of the name is my great great grandfather (also John, but surname Nothjung) in the 1861 census. If you search Peter Nothjung on google there are some interesting reading about him being a Communist helping Karl Marx, and Peter Nothjung was jailed for 6 years for treason. which may be a good reason to flee to England if your related !!
