O'BRIEN from Kilbenny Co Tipperary
« on: Sunday 19 September 10 00:07 BST (UK) »
I am hoping someone can help me trace some of my ancestors.  I was lucky enough to be able to speak with a cousin of my grandmother who told me about her aunts & uncles (my great gran uncles & aunts)

I was told two aunts went to Australia.  I do not know when they travelled to Australia, but I can't find them in the 1901 CENSUS in Ireland.

They are;

Margaret O'Brien DOB: 23/01/1872

Catherine O'Brien DOB: 21/05/1873

I have heard that there was a relation that went to Australia from the previous generation.  They must have headed out to him.

Any suggestions as to where I could start to look for information who be greatly appreciated.

Hi Moinear,

I wonder - there are two girls travelling from London destination Townsville departing London 29 Mar 1892 aboard the JELUNGA

O'BRIEN Mgt 19
O'BRIEN Kate 18

They were Irish - both single domestic servants.

Looks like there were a lot of young Irish servant girls aboard.

arrived 25 May

What were the girls parents names?

Cheers Kris  :)

Hi Kris,

That sounds like it could be them!  We believe they were travelling over to an uncle(?).

Their parents names were Timothy O'Brien & Johanna Slattery from Beheenagh, Kilbenny, Co Cork.

Thanks so much for your help.....

Moinear

Hi, I have an O'Brien in my family tree 1 generation back from there. There was a John O'brien probably still in Brittain but his son Edward James O'Brien married Ellen Haarsma in Australia c1875 and had several children before he died young in 1893 when a Dugan married her and had several more children. Regards, Colin Dugan.

Hi Again Moinear, I am no longer a subscriber on the site where this information was gathered but I am thinking of renewing again for many reasons. I would be happy to go into it in depth if I do. I actually got it from various family trees as the search I did on Dugan family brought up references from about 9 family trees and O'Briens were in most of those. I believe there was an O'Brien tree amongst them. If you would like to make direct contact I am ccjdtb13 at virginbroadband dot com dot au
    Regards,
            Colin.

I wonder is anyone is able to look census information up for the Townsville area of Queensland.

The people I am interested in arrived in Townsville from London 29 Mar 1892 aboard the JELUNGA, we think.

Margaret O'BRIEN DOB 23/01/1872
Kate (Catherine) O'BRIEN DOB 21/05/1873

They were born in Kilbehenny, Co Tipperary.

There were 2 children, a neices or nephews, not sure, who later travelled out to them in Australia, their surname was Mullins.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Moinear,
Margaret and Kate O'Brien landed in Townsville on the Jelunga on the 25th May 1892 together on the same ship on the same day.
The person helping me said there are no census records for Australia at that time and I have to believe her because she is an expert at this.
She says 2 Mullins boys Daniel and Patrick both 22 years of age arrived on 2nd of July 1908 on the Oruba to go to Ipswich, Queensland. These can be 11 months and 3 weeks apart and still be the same age.
We need to know if the uncle was a paternal or maternal uncle to see if we can trace him too.
Let me know what you get from this and ask anything you may still need.
And yes it appears my John O'Brien did come from Kilkenny or Tipperary.
