Are all posts searchable?
« on: Thursday 16 September 10 12:49 BST (UK) »
Would I be correct in thinking that all Rootschat posts, which can be seen by guests who are not logged in, are searchable within the site and also off the site via an internet search engine?

I am particularly thinking about posts which are several years old, some of which might have been moved onto the “completed” boards.

Basically, yes.   However the likes of the Totally off Topic board is not made available for searching

Thank you for replying.

As a general rule, therefore, is it fair to say that no posts are removed from public view (apart from the Totally Off Topic ones) and that all posts, effectively, remain available for anyone in the world to see, including those from, say, 2006 and earlier?

Yes, I think they are all available to the RC search engine, and probably Google, too.  I can search for old posts [2005] of my own and they come up in both RC and Google.

RootsChat aims to keep a large database of family history information for as long as possible.
Even when the original question has been answered the details are available for other searchers.

We often see replies to older posts which start:
"I was searching for name XYZ in google and found this post" or similar ...

Many distant relatives have found each other this way, and sometimes,
even when they aren't related, new posters can still add new information to the topic.
