Geoffrey Sheridan
« on: Tuesday 21 September 10 11:17 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find any connection to a Geoffrey Sheridan , I think he originated from Castlebar, County Mayo  .

The reason for this request is because he was a Witness at my G.G.Dads Wedding John Donoghue ( Donaghue )
in Liverpool 1885 . Johns Father was Patrick occupation blacksmith .

I unfortunately don t know what County John originated from .

Can anyone help please .

Regards

Tony Donoghue

Do you have any idea when he was born? civil registration of births in Ireland started in 1864 so before that date there will be no birth certificate. Your best chance of getting an age and birthplace (county at least) might be in English census records.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

All I know unfortunately he was a Witness to my G.G.Grandad Wedding in Liverpool 1885 . I have a copy of the Wedding Certificate
John and Geoffrey placed an X were their signatures should be I don't think they could write which was common at the Time .

Hi Tony,

I'm not sure if your Geoffrey Sheridan and my one are the same person?

My one (my great uncle) was born in Westport, Co. Mayo in 1865 and travelled to Liverpool (date unknown) and ended up settling and marrying in Scotland in 1895.

Yours
Eimear

Thanks for the reply , if it's the same person that would have made him aged twenty at Johns Wedding , how do you know he travelled to Liverpool ?

Best Wishes

Tony

Hi Tony,

Nice to hear from you.

I got the info from a descendant of his that I learned about, a g.grand-daughter, who is also researching the family tree.  She stated that he travelled under his mother's maiden name (Lally), but I'm not sure why!  (see this thread http://genforum.genealogy.com/sheridan/messages/1039.html

I haven't been in touch with her for a while, but will endeavour to do so soon.

Hi eimear,
I just came across this now , and I was checking out a family tree myself.
Geoffrey did come from Westport as he was part of my family connections but I only found this out myself recently through info given to me. I don’t know of his family in Scotland so you may have some more than I do.

Regards
Peter

Welcome to RootsChat, Peter  :)

Eimear hasn't been on-line here since February 2011, but if her e-mail notification is still working she will hopefully login and respond.

Geoffrey did come from Westport.........

Jeffrey Sheridan was born on 16th December 1865 at Raigh townland, Aghagower C.P.   MMN Lally

Raigh townland south of the town of Westport in Co Mayo.

She stated that he travelled under his mother's maiden name (Lally)........

These might be relatives of Jeffrey, including a 4-year old son Geoffrey.
