DYER, Greenwich, Blackheath 1850s
« on: Thursday 23 September 10 09:09 BST (UK) »
Not sure if this should be on the SURRREY or LONDON board - perhaps a mod could move it if I've got it wrong?  Thanks.

1851 census shows John Jones DYER with his wife Theresa Caroline and children living at "Norfolk House, Greenwich".  At the time J J Dyer was a 'first class clerk' with the Admiralty.

Theresa Caroline DYER died in late June/early July 1852, address given: Wellington Grove, Blackheath; (buried at Nunhead).

When I look at Googlemap it would seem that Wellington Grove has two large properties.  I am wondering if Theresa died at some kind of nursing home or other institution, or whether one of these was the family home.  J J D retired from the Admiralty in 1857 so I assume he stayed in the Greenwich area until then (in Bucks in 1861).

Any information would be great.  Any ideas where in Greenwich 'Norfolk House' might have been? Thanks.

Hi

According to 'Your Archives - Historical Street Project'

Norfolk House was probably on Old Woolwich Road (H0107 1587 folio 180)

The 1861 census only gives Norfolk Place (RG9 402)

Wellington Grove off Crooms Hill on the 1851 census HO107 1586 folio 389 shows you who was living there at the time of the 1851 census. They seem family homes.

Judging by the family baptisms, birthplaces and censuses they moved fairly frequently.

Greenwich was in Kent not Surrey. It became part of London in 1889 when the County of London was created.

Many thanks, Valda - what was I thinking?? Of course Greenwich is in Kent (or was).  I know the Nunhead cemetery is listed as Surrey though so I suppose that was how I got caught.

Cheers, Judith
