What does anno pd mean in parish registers?
« on: Monday 27 September 10 09:50 BST (UK) »
Have seen it in some baptisms for my family in 1500s - seems to be latin for Posuit Dedicavitque but I don't know what that means either!

Any help appreciated.

Thanks.

Been trying on the web, in Chambers' Dictionary, and Pears Cyclopaedia to no avail. Seems to be one of those circular arguments
which just lead nowhere. Unfortunately I failed Latin GCE at school.Perhaps a scholar can help? There are plenty on this site.

Anno means "in the year" and is usually followed by dom(ini), "in the year of the Lord". I'm afraid I have never seen it with pd as posuit dedicavitque which would mean  "he placed and dedicated" I think, perhaps referring to a gravestone. claytonbradley

I found this site

http://www.stars21.com/translator/latin_to_english.html

Which may prove useful in the future

"Placed a dedication" seems a likely translation  but not sure what that would actually mean in regards to a baptism

Could it possibly imply that they were buried in the same year as they were baptised?

I've not seen this in the flesh, and without seeing the full entry this is just a guess, but I would hazard "anno pr[a]edicto" which would mean the year previously mentioned.
This guess would be supported if:
the register only gives the full date when the year changes (25 March at that time)
or
the full date of baptism is given and "anno pd" is used for the date of birth - ore the other way round.

Will look out for that in older registers (pre 1752) in a project I'm involved in.
