oak terrace, swansea in 1901. where is it?
« on: Monday 27 September 10 13:42 BST (UK) »
Hello
Looking for any information on the whereabouts of Oak Terrace, in Swansea. My ancestor is living there in 1901, as stated in the shipping records, but I can't seem to find anything on old maps!
Does anyone know of this road in 'old Swansea'? I am assuming that the road has long gone by now or renamed. However any information on its location would be gratefully received.
Thankyou
Hobbyhorse

Hello
Thanks for your reply, but I don't think that's the correct address. It must have been somewhere in central Swansea, in 1901. It was definately Oak Terrace and not Oak Street.
kind regards and thanks for looking

Hi Hobbyhorse

The only Oak Terrace I can find in Swansea in 1901 is in Lougher.  Looking at Lougher on google maps, the houses look relatively modern so I suspect Oak Terrace and the surrounding area has probably been 'redeveloped'

Hello
Thanks for the replies. Would it be possible that Oak Terrace was a small side street, leading off from Llangyfelach rd?
The other option Oaklands Terrace... is that still there?
I think I am inclined to have a preference for the Llangyfelach option. I wonder where it was?
Thanks for taking the trouble to look.
kind regards

Hobbyhorse,
Oak Terrace is listed on the 1871 Census. It does not appear on any Swansea Census after that.

In 1871 the Enumerator records Nos 1, 2, 3 Llangyfellach Rd and then lists Nos 1-3 Oak Terrace and at No 4 is the Heart of Oak Public Hse.

There are several references to Oak Terrace on the Cambrian Index e.g
14/5/1875 - For Sale Heart of Oak Public Hse, Brynmelin + 2, 3 Oak Terrace
10/10/1879 - For Sale 4 Houses Oak Terrace, Brynmelin Rd, Nr Cwmfelin Tin Works

I checked the Swansea Electoral Rolls this afternoon for 1897 - no mention of Oak Terrace.

Checked a 1938 Street Map of Swansea, no mention of Oak Terrace

If you look at a google map of Swansea you will see Llangyfellach Street leading to Llangyfellach Road. One thought is that Oak Terrace became part of Llangyfellach Rd. In spite of what the locals might have called it, officially it was Llangyfellach Rd.

You mention "your ancestor living there according to the shipping records". If you post sufficient details about your ancestor, the 1901 Census could be checked and, if found, could resolve the situation.

regards

Hello
Thankyou ever so much for all the information. My ancestor, Margaret Leather nee Jones was married in Dec 1900.  The address for the marriage certificate is given as LLangyfelach rd. I have searched high and low for her, in the 1901 census, but cannot find her. I have searched through many different combinations of her name, but nothing has come up. In the 1901 census, the husband Joseph Leather is shown as being on board ship, in Swansea.
I am trying to find the whereabouts of his new wife, in 1901 and found the 28 Oak Terrace address, on his shipping document. She must be living here, but I cannot locate any sign of her, in the 1901 census.
Any help would be gratefully received.
