a girl's name?
« on: Tuesday 28 September 10 16:55 BST (UK) »
We have a "Cathen" for our great grandmother in a census return. The family was Welsh speaking. Can anyone tell us if this is:
a) a Welsh girl's name
b) a possible diminutive form of Catherine used in the nineteenth century
c) a shorthand for "Catherine" used by the census taker
d) Or ...... ?
Hoping someone will know the answer,

It could  be an abbreviation by the enumerator or a mis-transcription

Post the details of the entry and which census and we can take a look

Yes, of course. It's 1901 entry for Cathen James, wife of David James, Skewen Coedffranc  aged 39 born Neath,

Catherine shortened to Cathren and then misspelt Cathen or possibly a misinterpretation of Catrin.

Looking at the 1901 image - David has been abbreviated to Dd by the enumerator so I'm pretty certain the image reads Catherine

I'm not sure whether daughter Blodwen is 9 or 19 in 1901 but if aged 9 - this is a possible marriage

Marriages June qtr 1891

I was just about to say the same thing. Lots of abbreviated names on the page.

Have you found the family in earlier censuses? The have a 19 ye old daughter Blodwen (not abbreviated) in 1901) so it should be possible to find them.
