sure you have James death right?

found:
death: james Bains mar 1867 age 84  birth 1783  south shields 10a/366

probate:
James Bains died 22/2/1867 probate 20 march 1867  effects under £2,000
late of East Saville st,south shields. gwntleman deceased who died 22/2/1867. proved by John Bains of souht shields aforesiad draper, the son, one of hte executors.

just checked - address on 1861c  is East Saville street so def your James.

James Bains born 25/5/1782  chr 2/6/1782
son of Alexander Bains & Euphan Corsterphin  pittenweem

Thanks for the info.
For James death I had worked forward from 1861 and found a James Bains death in South Shields 10a/246. I assumed incorrectly that there would only be one. Should have used FreeBMD.
I had the census data. FindMyPast had James listed as James B Aim in1861.
Although Ann does not show in the 1841 census the only death I can find is in 1849, 24/149.
I will need to get a copy from GRO to check (if only they had a system equivalent to SP).
Yes Euphan Corsterphin not Jean (too much wine??)

H Ian - i couldn't find a death for Ann earlier either. I think the 1849 is probably her. maybe she is with family in the  1841 - maybe even in scotland.

i could not find a marriage on SP for Alex & Euphan either.
