Kingswinford Workhouse
« on: Monday 04 October 10 00:54 BST (UK) »
Hi guys, ive been doing some research and ive found some ancestors that, for a time at least, resided in the Kingswinford workhouse. My ancestor, Susannah Wood and her 3 children, Hanah Maria, David and Sarah were all residents of the workhouse in 1851 when the census was taken but by the 1861 census are living with Soloman Wood - im guessing its the childrens father, susannah's husband. Does anybody know if records still exist for the workhouse at all or, if they do, were they may be held. I'd really like to discover were Soloman was while his family were in the workhouse and wondered if records may state the family's reason for residing there at the time.

Any help would be fantastic, thanks

Luke

Maybe some more records held at either Worcester or Dudley Archives.

Hi Luke
guess we're related Solomon & Susannah were my Great Great Grandparents - looked at some of your posts & think your descended from Horace Davies & Elsie Hadfield - James Davies & Betsy Wood? My Grandfather was Betsy's brother Sylvanus.
Best Wishes Christine

Hi Luke
I wonder if Solomon Wood was in Jail and that was why Susannah and the children were in the workhouse. A Solomon Wood was sentenced to 1 months imprisonment for larceny at the Worcester couny assizes in July 1849.

Best Wishes

Solomon Wood was also sentenced to another months imprisonment in January 1852 at Worcestershire county assizes.
