Annis WIKS
« on: Monday 04 October 10 23:10 BST (UK) »
Greetings.

Annis Wiks married Peter Wedd 22 Jan 1574; she died 17 Aug 1593. All this is happening in and around Great Shelford (4 miles south of Cambridge).

Does anyone know anything of the Wiks/Wicks/Wickes family at that period? Am I right in supposing that there is a Dutch background to the name?

Thanks for any help!

 Laurie
Wedd, Cotter, Nash, Hays, Stockbridge (Cambs/Herts), Pine (Kent), Chaplin (Cambs/Herts)
Frost (Cornwall), Carr.

Hi laurie,

Can't see any Wiks in Great Shelford.

There is a John Wikes in Dullingham in 1634

And then with the name Wickes you have

Agnes 1588 Grantchester
Anne 1592 Arrington
Annes 1555 Toft

These are the only A's  and the closest for you would be the Annes :-\

Unfortunatly Toft christenings do not appear to have a batch ref in the IGI for Cambridgeshire
Middlesex   Burnett  Clark   Potter    Cleary    Avery    Moore Howard Jode Keating
Norfolk    Rudd    Twite    Hudson    Chapman Moore Spink Adams
Suffolk    Horne    Cadge    Sutton    King    Adams
Essex    Cable    Wright                         Cumberland  Forbes
Somerset Clarke (pre 1800)                  Cambridgeshire Muncey Parcell
Devon  Flashman                                   Limerick    Hannigan

There's an Annes Wick dau of William & Ann baptised at Toft on 1 Nov 1555 (BVRI, so reliable)

The name Wick or Wicks appears to come from the old English name for an outlying settlement or farm. I can't find any Dutch involvement

Just checked the IGI - the baptism is there as part of a C batch ie extracted from parish registers
