Hi all again

Further to my last post a while ago i have made great strides and found a cousin in County Down with the family bible of Birth records (my thanks to the Down Recorder and Isobel).

I am looking for the following now: Children of Robert Sloan and Elizabeth Kennedy of Ballyrush, Comber

2. Mary Sloan b 23/02/1810, married ?
3. Elizabeth Sloan b 02/08/1812  MARRIED to WILLIAM SMYTH ? when. One child found so far = Maria Smyth born 1848 and married to HUGH FRAZER-HURST in 1874. On her death record it states her parents are William Smyth, Occ: Farmer and Elizabeth Sloan. Anymore children?.  When she married it stated she lived in Warrenpoint
4. Sara Sloan b 24/04.1815 married to Hugh GIBSON of Tullynagee (have all of these)

In the next Generation belonging to Robert Sloan of Ballyrush i have

3. Elizabeth Sloan born 1859 ?? died
4. Margaret Sloan born 1861 ? died

6. William COOKE NELSON SLOAN(e) born 1864 married a SARA DOUGLAS nee BLAIR and had James born 1897, Alice born 1899 and Jane Smith Harried Sloan born 1902.  He spelt his name in 1911 census of Ireland as SLOANE and they were in Ormeau, County Down.
7. Jane Smith Harris Sloan born 1866 died a spinster
8. Sarah Sloan born 1868 and died
9. Sarah Sloan born 1871 ??? what happened to her
10 Maria Kennedy Sloan born 1873 and married her cousin HUGH GIBSON of Tullynagee (have all of these)

Any help with this family would be very much appreciated.  Is there no index of BDM's like most countries have for Northern Ireland (i.e that you can search online to help find these later people??) or am i just not looking in the right place.

Cheers Jo

Hi and thank you for my replies - i think i have opened a can of worms with the Smyths now.  I am so confused.

I have three KNOWN Smyth girls.

1. Maria Smyth born 1848 married in 1871 to Hugh Frazer Hurst. Father listed as William Smyth  Died in Scotland 1933 - Parents listed as William Smyth, Farmer and Elizabeth Sloan. Not known where she was born.

2. Elizabeth Smyth born approx 1845, Died May 1909 - Hugh and Maria Frazer Hurst were executors of her will.
Born County Londonderry according to 1901 census

3. Sarah Smyth born approx 1846 married Rev. Joseph Frazer Hurst at Drimbolg R P Church in May 1871,    died in Fermoy, County Cork after 1901 parents listed as Rev. James Smyth Minister of R P Church and witnesses to the wedding were Maria Smyth and Hugh Frazer Hurst. She was born in County Londonderry according to the 1901 census of Fermoy County Cork

Then i found the Drimbolg Graveyard Inscriptions on line

In Memory of the
Revd James. A. Smyth.M.A.
For 45 years the beloved
Minister of this congregation,
Who died 29th December 1873,
Aged 73 years.
And Jane, His wife who died
9th April 1855, Aged 43 years,
Also his daughters
Elizabeth, Sarah, Margaret Jane
Maryanne and Maria
Elizabeth Smyth,
Died 20th May 1909.
Also James Alexander Smyth,
Who died 25th April 1933.
Also his wife,
Margaret Ann Smyth,
Who died 22nd September 1943.
Their daughter Maud,
Died 24th August 1981 Aged 65 years.

Is Maria his daughter and not William's - could there be two Maria's ??

The only marriage i could find for a Sloan and Smyth is for Margaret Sloane and James Davis (this is wrong middle name i have researched this) Smyth on the 10 Dec 1838 County Down and it was a submission not a record at IGI.

Again any help would be appreciated.

Cheers Jo

I have a Sarah Smythe from "Grove Hill" (not sure which Grove Hill, there seem to have been a few) who married an Alexander Hall and had three girls Jane, Sarah,  and Mary Hall in the early to mid 1820s. They may have lived close to the Down / Armagh border, and the only child's birth details we have is from 1823 - Sarah baptised in C of I, Donaghmore in Tyrone.

Not sure if this info will help - hopefully it might connect with someone out there!
