UK Prison Hulk Register & Letters
« on: Monday 11 October 10 21:32 BST (UK) »

I have a convict, Thomas Hynes, tried in Wicklow in 1824 and transported in the 'Lonach' in 1825 to Aust.  I have found the following reference in the recently released UK Prison Hulk Registers & Letter:

No 2432, Thomas Hynes, Hulk 'Fortitude', 1822-1836, moored at Chatham.

There are no details as to place of trial, native place or how disposed of.

I was wondering if someone with more knowledge of the Hulk Registers and Letters could tell me if:

There is any way of linking prisoner no 2432 to more specific details
 or
knowing if Irish convicts were incarcerated on the Hulks in these Registers.

With thanks,

Anniebelle

Hi Anniebelle

the full details of that entry:-

Sent from Maidstone (presumably Maidstone Prison):-

Thomas Hynes, aged 24, Felony 2 Indictments, convicted on 20 October 1835 at Maidstone.    On looking at it this Thomas Hynes *may* have got 7 years but there's a 3 weeks on his entry as well

Its not completely clear how long he was in sentenced for save that he was sent to New South Wales, Australia on 28 May 1836

Thank you for your reply.

Unfortunately this is not my Convict.

I am interested to know how you were able to access the additional detail.  Is this something that I could find online?

I appreciate your helping me.

Hi

its on Ancestry.  There are 2 Thomas Hynes' though on there - possibly the same person, but one has the info that I found and the other has comments on his character being "very indifferent...."  :o

Thanks for the comments. I appreciate you taking an interest.

I wonder if there were any Irish Convicts on the UK Hulks?  Shall need to do more research unless there is an expert out there who knows the answer?

Regards, Anniebelle.

Judith,

I meant to add that Thomas Hynes had the alias "Lyons"!

The Sydney Morning Herald, 24th July 1846 p2.
Circumstances of the death of a Thomas Hynes, married man, leaving wife and two children.
Sunday 12th July 1846, Campbelltown.

However, there are 16 Thomas Hynes listed as died in NSW (NSW BDM Index).
