just spotted a typo in the details given on the  IrishTimes webpage for Listowel

the first line of the marriage records should read '8 Jan 1837 - 28 May 1838'

there's then a gap until 10 Nov 1842

The Irish Times has maps and details of the parishes and dates for which records are available - but no actual records. The parish data for Kerry is on the IrishGenealogy website.

Thanks Shane - another dead end!
I keep hoping that something will turn up, not quite ready to throw in the towel.
Are there any hard copy (Catholic) records of this period (c.1790-1835)  that would make a visit to Dublin or Listowel  or elsewhere in Kerry worth while? I think the family are likely to have been very poor, so there will be no great monuments ...

The dates mentioned on the Irish Times website (see reply #8), and NLI index etc are all dates for which records are known to exist. Few rural RC parishes were keeping written records before the 1830s.. some started much later
