Hugh Rowlands
« on: Tuesday 12 October 10 23:17 BST (UK) »
I am trying to establish how and when Hugh Rowlands (b 1846 in Newborough, Anglesey) arrived in Tasmania.  He died there on 22nd April 1884 and is buried in Lefroy cemetery. I have a picture of his gravestone.  He is listed in the Tasmanian register of deaths for that year. I intend to get a copy of his death certificate which might yield some clues.  He does not appear in any of the other lists I have searched.  Could it be that he was a crewman on a vessel calling at a Tasmanian port?  I believe that he may have been my grandmother's uncle.

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

The Welsh 1851 shows the family living in Caernarvonshire - parents Hugh & Jane

In 1861 and 1871 - Hugh jnr is not with them and I can't find him with that birthplace in 1861/71

He was only 14yrs old in 1861 so was far too young to have emigrated

Hi,

In 1851 I can see 7 Hugh ROWLAND/S born Anglesey between 1845-1847,

Hugh ROWLAND  abt 1846 Amlwch, Anglesey
Father:  Thomas,
Mother:  Mary
still with his parents in 1861.

Hugh ROWLAND  abt 1847 Amlwch, Anglesey
Father:  John,
Mother:  Elizabeth
looks like he's a servant in Amlwch in 1861.

Hugh Rowland  abt 1848 Holyhead, Anglesey
Mother:  Ann (married)
with parents William and Ann in 1861.

Hugh Rowlands  abt 1846 Llanrhyddlad, Anglesey
Mother:  Emma  (married), a sister Catherine aged 10months amongst other siblings.
I think the children Hugh and Catherine are nephew and neice to a Hugh Williams in 1861.

Hugh Rowlands  abt 1847 Llandesilio, Anglesey
Father:  Richard
Mother:  Cathrine
with mother in 1861

Which leaves...

Hugh ROWLAND  abt 1848 Anglesea, Llanvack
Father:  Misheck
Mother:  Elizabeth
Living in Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan

Hugh Rowland  abt 1847 Newbro, Anglesey
Father:  Hugh
Mother:  Jane
Living in Newborough St Peter, Caernarvonshire

So which one is this mariner in 1861?

1861  RG9/2669  f.84  p.34  Liverpool, Lancashire
1 ct?  Upper Smithfield

Edward THOMAS    Head    M    45  Cotton Porter  Anglesea
Hannah     "           Wife    M    50                         "

Thank you all for your help.

I now have Hugh Rowlands' death certificate.  He ended up as a miner in Tasmania and died from tuberculosis.  There was no respondent named on the death certificate, so whose mine he was working in, I don't know.

The most likely Hugh Rowlands in the 1851 census is the son of Hugh and Jane.  He could be the mariner at age 14 in Liverpool in the 1861 census, as Newborough boys often ran away to sea to escape a lifetime of subsistence on the land.

The 1881 census has a Hugh Rowlands as mate on the Lady Jane Roberts in Southampton.  I can find no trace of this vessel in my searches so far.
