William Samuel Fitch d Simla India c1917
« on: Wednesday 13 October 10 02:12 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for more information on is my father-in-law's uncle William Samuel Fitch, b 1875 in Chelmsford, s/o George Fitch and Emily Beattie. The Indian Army Quarterly List for 1 Jan 1912 indicates that he joined the army 15 Aug 1905 and was on the India Miscellaneous List, in the Survey of India Dept, Simla. The London Gazette 18 Feb 1919 announces a promotion but says he was deceased 1st Jan 1918.

Is it possible to find our more of what he did in India, exactly when he died, and where he is buried. I cannot find many sources for the Indian Army. Also any indication of whether he married while in India?

Hi

FIBIS
http://www.fibis.org/

Have a transcript entry : 1906 Marriage of William S FITCH in 1906 to a Harriet BURTWELL
Marriage Indexes 1894-1909

There is another entry related to William Samuel FITCH, as a Military Clerk.

Go into FIBIS Database at top
Then on the left see : Search - Find a person

Just search the surname.

His death is on the CWGC site - states he is buried in Simla cemetery.
http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=1499067

Search W FITCH - WW1 and his is the last entry in the results : Commander W S FITCH

Ambly -- you are amazing. Could you clarify whether the marriage was also on the fibis site, as I didn't see it there. Or is it somewhere else?
Would the marriage have been in India, or in England?

Thank you so much

If you go to the Pilot Familysearch site there is a reference to William Samuel FITCH's marriage, with date, father's names etc.

Thanks Ian. That was great. Also found on the regular FamilySearch that Harriet Burtwell was his first cousin once removed.

Any idea why the Pilot FamilySearch site and the regular one have such different data on them?

Thanks again.
