Missing: Ward or Sloan in Ayrshire
« on: Wednesday 13 October 10 22:40 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help, please?   I'm trying to find birth record/parents of Margaret Sloan Ward  b 1880 Coylton, Ayrshire.  1901 Scotland Census:  Maggie W. Pollock + William Pollock b 1881 St. Quivox, Worsthorn, Ayrshire.    Kilmarnock, address 1 N Hamilton Street.   (d. Trail + Rossland, British Columbia, Canada)
Thank you!

Hi Cran

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

Possibility Maggie's surname may have been WARK rather than WARD? There is this possible entry in 1881:

William Wark 25, coal miner b. Old Monkland, Lanarkshire
Marion Wark 23 b. Coylton, Ayrshire
Margaret S Wark 2 b. Coylton, Ayrshire
Christine W Wark 9 Months b. Coylton, Ayrshire

Address: Lorne Row, Coylton Ayrshire

The best place to confirm Maggie's parents would be from her marriage entry to William Pollock. This is available to view on the official pay to view site www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk - costs are reasonable. Have you tried searching for the marriage? I can see a likely entry for a William Pollock and a Margaret Sloan WARK in 1900 in Ayrshire.

Hi, Monica;
Thank you!  Thank you!  My D regist. 1958 = Margaret Sloan Pollock, Rossland BC CA;  CA Census1916 = Margaret Sloan Ward Pollock; and 1901 Scotland Census = Maggie W Pollock, but have seen an unsourced entry using "Wart".
The name + date seem to fit which gives me a couple of other avenues to search.
I'm new to research so your information and the RootsChat site are very much appreciated.

Hi Cran

If you search here http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#start (one of the new sites for the LDS) under 'advanced search'. If you put in William Pollock and then spouse Margaret Wark, you will see a number of entries. Given the location, I am guessing that we are on the right track with Margaret's surname being WARK  :)

Cran, have you got access to Ancestry.com via a subscription? There are a number of family trees there for whom I think are your Margaret's family.

William Wark married a Marion SLOAN, likely the source of Margaret's middle name specially as Marion's mother is also showing as Margaret.

The marriage of William Wark and Marion Sloan took place in 1877 in November 1877 in Coylton. William's parents show as Robert Wark and Christina White. Marion's parents show as Joseph Sloan and Margaret Dick. Both fathers were coal miners. An image of the certificate from Scotlands People (re the link I gave you earlier) is also included on the tree.

A lot of info is included on the tree I am looking at, with images of actual documents. The origins of the WARK surname seem to point to Ireland where the earliest Warks are recorded as being being born at the end of the 1700s.

Hope you have a subscription to be able to access and make contact with other descendents of this line!

Monica  :)

Hi, Monica;
Yes, thanks to your suggestion re Wark, I found the line you mentioned on Ancestry,  and iit appears to be owned by a Wark, but have not yet contacted her.  Hopefully she will have some family stories to go along with the names/dates and willing to share.
Again, thank you.
