John Parry Cefn Mawr (Ruabon Parish)
« on: Thursday 14 October 10 00:48 BST (UK) »
Hello :)

I have John Parry a 70 year old Quarry Man Free Stone in 1881 at 3 Bird in Hand Yd, Cefn Mawr. This census says born around 1911 in Ruabon Parish, and his wife Eliza born 1822 Bilston, Staffordshire. However, 1871 census has the birth places reversed! ::)

Please can someone trace them further back, possibly in Ruabon Parish records if possible?

Many thanks
Morgan

Hi morganallen

Unfortunately the Ruabon records I have access to end in 1807.   In 1871 the family are transcribed on ancestry under Pacey.  There is a correction note from a descendant of Charles Solomon Parry which states Eliza's maiden name was HULSTON.   A general search on ancestry for HULSTON reveals several people born Bilston Staffordshire so perhaps this is a clue?    If you haven't already done it, your best bet might be to post on the Staffordshire board as someone over there may have access to Bilston PRs?

Thanks Heather  :)
I seem to remember a Hailstone surname but can't find my notes  ::)
There is a Wrexham marriage at St Mary's Church Ruabon in 1840 which is a strong possibility. John Parry and Eliza Hallstone on the same page, and the correct Parish.

Hopefully someone may have the 1840 PR to save me buying yet another certificate  ;)

I think the 1841 census for Ruabon is missing so the earliest census would be 1851.

Hi

I've only just noticed this thread and I'm not sure if you've got any further with this family but in 1851 they are in Cefn

HO107-2503-157-10

John Parry, hd, 39,mason*, b. Ruabon
Eliza, w, 29, b. Bilston
Elizabeth, d, 4, b. Bilston
Mary Ann, d, 2, b. Bilston

* entered as meason

There's not a good match for a baptism of John in Ruabon. Maybe the family were non-conformist (if so WRJones might be able to help).

The nearest I have at St Mary's are

22 Nov 1814 - son of William (wheelwright) and Ann of Newbridge
28 Oct 1808 - son of Richard and Elizabeth of Cefn Mawr
18 Apr 1808 - son of Edward and Mary of Morton Above

My records for marriages finish in 1837 so I can't help there but Paul might be able to find something.

 :)

I've just found the baptisms of Elizabeth and Mary Ann in St John Rhosymedre so the 1851 census info is probably  incorrect for their birth places -

21 August 1846 Elizabeth Parry daughter of John (mason ) and Eliza of Rhosymedre

1st Oct 1848 Mary Ann Parry daughter of John (quarryman) and Eliza of Cefn Mawr

I did look in the Blackwell Index of Non Conformist Baptisms in Denbighshire as produced by Clwyd FHS,for a suitable baptism of a John Parry in the Cefn Mawr area but drew a blank.

Thank you JL and wrjones

I haven't looked at this post for a while so it was a lovely surprise to see your replies.  :D

John was my 3G Grandfather and must have had a hard life working in the quarries of Cefn and Rhosymedre. They had 8 or 9 boarders with them in 1881 as well as their son Charles so 3 Bird in Hand Yard must have been crowded  :o Does anyone know where this was in Cefn please?

kind regards
Morgan

Whilst I'm not old enough to remember the Bird In The Hand,it was a Pub apparently, you may find these old photos of the Cefn Mawr area of interest.

As to where it was Morgan, from the 1881 Census I would say it was in the area where Herb Muck had his sweetshop the top of Hill Street.
