1566 Will
« on: Friday 15 October 10 08:03 BST (UK) »
I have a Will that is way too hard for me to decipher. Probate was granted in April 1566.

This is the first (and easy) bit, plus my attempt.

“In the Name of god Amen the iiy [3rd] daye of Julye Anno din a thausand fyeff hundreth three
Scoore & faure [1564] I Yssabell KELFULL wyddowe of the pyssh of wytthelsey beyng of a holle mynde &
A good pfectt memorye thanks be gyffen to god therfore doth mayk my last wyll & testamont in
thys man & forme foloynge fyrst & before all wordlye thyngs I bequeyth my sawll in
to the hands of the ?t.l..fye? trynite trustyng by the myrryts of chrysts passyon to ?beptatt?
of hs glorys & my [body to be] buriedd In the church yard of wyttylsey maris Aforesaye”

Before I give up, can anyone help me please?

Regards
Grantley

Grantley,

I think "three" is right in the first line,

In the fifth line it might be "holye" under the black mark, followed by "trynite trustyng by the myrryts of chrysts passyon to be [?]"

The last word in the fifth line seems to start "per" or "par" .

Hope these suggestions help.

Roger

Thankyou Roger,

Your suggestions have helped.

I am not too sure about “holye”. I was thinking along the lines of “t.l..fye”

The year of “a thausand fyeff hundreth ?three? Sixre & faure” hasn’t rang any bells for me, as yet. It would be nice to know the year that it was written.

Regards
Grantley

Great spotting Roger.

That is the first Will that I have seen, using scores in the date.

You have inspired me to not give up on this Will & will post some more.

Regards
Grantley
