BOGGS from Derry born 1894

I've not been able to find a birth record (therefore no parents, no town names, etc.) for a Mary Ellen Boggs born June 1894 reputedly in Derry.  Any assistance will be appreciated.

Do you have any other information about her? Would she have been in Ireland in 1901 and 1911? What's your source(s) for the details you have posted?

The 1901 census has a Minnie Boggs, age 6, living with grandparents in Donegal-

Boggs is not a very common name in Ireland and there are only 169 entries in the 1901 census for the whole of Ireland. No females were born in Co Derry at all.

No Mary Ellen Boggs in the census either. Nearest is a Mary R aged 9 (born at sea).

There was a Mary Eliza Boggs birth registered Strabane Apr – June 1899 and a Mary Ellen Bogue b Lisnaskea, Co Fermanagh July – Sept 1896. This appears to be her in the 1901 census:

Forename name Mary Ellen is from US social security record; maiden surname Boggs and "from Derry" is from my son's mother-in-law; 1930 census lists her as married to John Snellinger and using the name "Minnie" and that census notes her as age 35 (i.e., born about 1894-1895) in "north ireland" and immigrated to US in 1913.

Ellis Island shows one Minnie arriving in 1913, on the Cameronia, last residing in Carndonagh, Ireland, so it would appear that she should be in the 1911 census, but, Carndonagh is way up by Malin head, yes?  So, not knowing my Irish geography all that well, which of the 1911 entries for Minnie Boggs is most likely the right one?

To compound that, the Ellis Island site also shows another Minnie of about the same age arriving a year earlier, also from n. ireland.  So.....which is the right minnie.

You ask which Minnie is likely to be the right one. Impossible to say for certain without more info. The one on the Cameronia from Cardonagh is surely the same person as the one in Ballagh in the 1901 census and Tullanree in the 1911. Both are just north of Cardonagh, on the road to Malin Head.

The other Minnie lived in Tamlaght which is about 30 miles south of Londonderry.

Since you’ve found 2 Minnie Boggs in the passenger lists, it is possible that they both emigrated to the US. Which doesn’t help you at all.

I notice that the “Cardonagh” Minnie was Presbyterian, but the Tamlaght one was Reformed Presbyterian, (often referred to as a Covenanter). Any clues there, do you know which religion your Minnie was of? Did she ever mention the Covenanter church perhaps?

Going by the ages, the Minnie you are searching for was born in June 1894. The one from Cardonagh was 6 in the 1901 census ie b c 1894/5 and she was 17 in 1901 ie b c 1893/94. Whereas the Tamlaght Minnie was 10 in 1901 ie b c 1890/91 and 18 in 1911 ie b c 1892/93. There is obviously some inconsistency in the census data but the Tamlaght Minnie is apparently older than your Minnie, and so of the 2, the Cardonagh one fits better agewise. But that’s hardly proof it’s the correct one.

The connection with Derry could just be that your Minnie was living there before she emigrated. It may not be the place she was born.

arrived 12 Oct.1913 Cameronia age 19, to sister Mrs. Maggie McKer? 162 E 57th St. N.Y., born Ballylifford, father George Boggs Carndonagh, destination Philadelphia.
1930 census gives birthplace as 'North Ireland' - are you sure it doesn't say Northern Ireland?

There's also a Minnie Boggs arrived 21 Sept.1914 Cameronia age 22, going to cousin & wife Samuel Boggs Melrose Spring Park Philadelphia, relative in UK cousin Samuel McCaughey Killymuck Upperlands (Ellis Island has indexed as Appelands, Ireland). This is in Co.Londonderry.

Her name was indeed Mary Jane, not Mary Ellen.  Still working on it.
