Elizabeth GOULD death 1858 Napier**completed**
« on: Thursday 21 October 10 06:42 BST (UK) »
Well trying to help another friend and what a brickwall!

http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&cl=search&d=HBH18580515.2.6&srpos=1&e=--1858---1858--100-HBH-1----0fire--
Report of death of Elizabeth Gould as result of fire 4 May 1858
husband Private Gould

They got the death cert and informant was Edward Jones who is also in the 65th Regiment
No mention of husband or if she had children..which we wanted to see to support a tale that the boys parents had been killed in a fire.

Sometimes the surname is GOLD, GOOD.

I've searched endlessly at Papers Past to see if there could be any earlier mentions of the fire, withour success.

What else??? Are there any early Hawkes Bay/Napier refs I'm missing???

The book Discharged in NZ has some possible firstnames for husband as:
HAMILTON GOOLD
JAMES GOOLD
enrolled ?Auckland 1852..so you would think marriage would have been here

I suppose that may be one avenue to look at???

then there is a GEORGE GOULD
Any suggestions to findong more info about this couple/the fire appreciated

Bye
Althea

Hi althea,

Do you know where she is buried? A cemetery record might help (but perhaps doubtful given the year).

What about NZSG Hawke's Bay http://www.genealogy.org.nz/Hawkes_Bay_139.aspx or Napier Library?

Another thought would be to trace the arrival of the 65th Regiment (known by the Maori as the Hickety-Pips) to NZ. http://hicketypip.tripod.com/history.htm

Perhaps it might help with the surname. And explain what happened to 'Private GOULD' after Elizabeth's death?

From the website I mentioned above...

"In 1858, in response to inter-tribal fighting, a detachment, commanded by Brevet Lieut. Col. Wyatt, was dispatched to Napier from Auckland, arriving 7 February on board the Eastfield, followed by three detachments from Wellington on the Wonga Wonga, arriving 26 February, 18 March and 25 March."

I wonder if Napier holds passenger lists for any of those voyages.

Have you eliminated a NZ marriage?

riley

From a website called Old Napier Cemetery - 1850's - 1870's

GOULD, Elizabeth, 4 May, aged 21yrs (soldiers wife)
