Balfe family of Kells
« on: Thursday 21 October 10 22:26 BST (UK) »
I would appreciate any help to establish the ancestry of my Grandmother, Annie Maria Balfe. I understand that she was born in or near Kells.
From her marriage certificate, I know that she was born in 1880 or1881 and was a domestic servant in Liverpool.
Her father was Edward Balfe, a shop porter, who was deceased by the time of her marriage in 1906. She is known to have at least one brother: John.

Have you tried the Civil BMD Index for her birth ?

see : Introduction to Irish Records

A little bit earlier than the date you estimated... maybe Annie under-estimated her age a little on the marriage registration ?

this birth is on the extracted records on familysearch :

 Name: Anne Balfe
 Birth Date: 26 Jan 1876
 Birthplace: Meath, Ireland
 Father's Name: Edward Balfe
 Mother's Name: Mary Mcdonnell
 Ref No: v 7-2 p 873

middle names are not always included in the index. The reference number can be used to find the full index details needed to order a cert from the GRO. i.e.

 Name: Anne Balfe
 Registration District: Kells
 Event Type: Birth
 Year: 1876
 volume : 7 / page : 873

The volume and page numbers match the extracted record, and the registration distrct fits includes the town of Kells. A birth cert will show more details to allow you to check father's occupation.

possible siblings to Anne (from extracted records) :

James Balfe, 24 Jan 1872, Nobber, Meath
John Balfe, 14 Jan 1874, Nobber, Meath, Ref. p877 ln313
Ellen Balfe, 10 May 1878, Kells, Meath

mother for James is given as Mary Mcdaniel... possibly a mis-hearding of McDonnell ?

The town and townland of Nobber are about 17km to the north east of the town of Kells and in the same registration district.

Thanks very much for that help Shane. I will now send for a birth certificate, and see where that takes me.
