Joseph Evans b1866 Hengoed, Oswestry
« on: Friday 22 October 10 01:17 BST (UK) »
Hello  :)

Please can someone help me to find Joseph Evans before 1901?

In 1911 he was at Well St Cefn Mawr with his wife and 4 sons.
RG14PN34025 RG78PN1964 RD621 SD2 ED22 SN154

In 1901 he was at 1 Red Lion Sq, Cefn Mawr with his family and his brother Thomas (b1864) RG13 Piece 5218 Folio 82 Page 6

In 1891 his family were at 188 Chorley Road, Westhoughton, Lancs but no sign of Joseph and no recorded Head of household.

I would like to find him in 1871-91 and if possible his birth/christening at Hengoed.

Many thanks
Morgan

I've searched til I'm boggle-eyed but there's no sign of him elsewhere.

I would suggest that he was with the family at home but the person who transcribed the information made a mistake and missed his name off.  That could account for Mary Ann being listed as "Wife" and not "Head".

Hi Z

Yes, I think that is likely to be him; can't understand why I couldn't see him  ::)
The names match those of his children. location is close, and the ages of Joseph and Thomas match
Thank you  :)

Hi Shropshire Lass, sorry you're boggle eyed  ;D
I think you're right about him being missed off in 1891.

Would be great if someone can find them in 1871 and hopefully earlier?  :)

Well, that was easier!  Except that the original is almost unreadable so not much detail, I'm afraid.
Had a look on another site and added the missing bits.

1871 - RG10/2785/31/7.
All EVANS.
All born Shropshire.
Living at Daywell, Oswestry, Shropshire.

George, Head, M, 31. Occ: Labourer. Born Selattyn.
Sarah, Wife, M, 29.
Thomas, Son, S, 8. Scholar.
Joseph, Son, S, 6.  Scholar.
Elizabeth, Dau, S, 3.
John, Son, S, 1.

Sarah and all the children have "Hant, Shropshire" as their place of birth?

Thank you Shropshire Lass  :)

I expect it was the part of Daywell that was "severed, having been assigned to the Hengoed district, the church of which was built in, and the chief part of the district taken from, the parish of Selattyn." rather than the part that became part of Whittington Parish. [Genuki]

There's a marriage between a George Evans and Sarah Bevan in Sep qr 1862, Oswestry, 6a-1119.  You might need the certificate or a parish records look-up by someone in order to find the name of George's father.

There are two George Evans in the 1861 in Oswestry and no obvious way to say which is yours.  There are two hints in that one has a father called Thomas and George called his first son Thomas and the other George is working as a blacksmith but not enough to rely on.

1861 - RG9/1878/113/7.
All EVANS.
Beatrice Street, Oswestry.
Thomas, Head, M, 38, Cork Cutter, b Oswestry.
Elizabeth, Wife, M, 23, b Newtown, Mont.
George, Son, S, 21, Cork Cutter, b Oswestry.
Thomas Charles, Son, 1, b Oswestry.
This looks like George was from an early marriage and Elizabeth is wife No. 2.

1861 -  RG9/1879/10/14.
St Martins, Oswestry.
William Jones, Head, M, 31, Blacksmith, b Chirk, Denbighshire.
Catherine Jones, Wife, M, 27, b Chirk, Denbighshire.
Margaret Jones, Dau, 6, b Ruabon, Denbighshire.
Ann Jones, Dau, 3, b Llangollen, Denbighshire.
Edward Jones, Son, 7mths, b St Martins, Shropshire.
George Evans, Servant, 21, Blacksmith, b St Martins, Shropshire.
Harriet Clay, Servant, 16, b. St Martins, Shropshire.

Thank you  :)
I've found a 40 year old George Evans, Cork cutter, in 1881 at Orchard St, Oswestry so that rules him out unfortunately.
RG11 2659/42 26

There's also a 39 year old George S Evans, Ironmonger, in Church St, Oswestry, but not sure whether a blacksmith would become an ironmonger.....  :-\

George S Evans is in the 1871, already married to Hannah and with daughter Caroline, living in Church Street so you can eliminate him - RG10/2782/42/22.
