Medals - Mrs. Shinkfield, Rugby
« on: Sunday 24 October 10 23:29 BST (UK) »
A few years ago I found a few small medals in an old writing desk, and would love to see them find their home:

2 medals engraved "B T H Control Gear Factory"
   1933-34 Winner & 1936-37 Runner-up
    W SHINKFIELD

1 medal "Warwick County C.D. 1942 Competition Winner
    MRS. SHINKFIELD

1 .A.R.P badge (has written on base of box: Warden Mrs. Shinkfield)

1 Pin badge for Royal Engineers (no name)

I've found out that BTH stands for British Thomson Houston Co Ltd, Rugby.

One of the medals is in a box from J Parriss jewellers, Rugby, which is still a family business (from 1892), so I thought I could contact them in the slim hope they might know the name (am presuming they would have done the engraving).
Anyone able to help with any other ideas please - maybe a Rootschatter from Rugby who could give me a local newspaper contact?

Many thanks!

The Rugby Advertiser should be able to help, you will find contact details if you put it in your search engine.

It is just possible that control gear factory was moved or transferred to Nelson in Lancashire at one time.

You could loan the items to the County Records Office.

BTH merged with GEC but retained a large hold in Rugby and surrounding towns and Coventry, Marconi also came into the equation, AEI which eventually resulted still has a presence in the town today including a Football team.
I would try to find the family before letting the stuff disappear into a Record Office, doubt if they would be interested in medals in any case.

Please allow me to be very pedantic and correct your time line,  as I once worked in Rugby for AEI.

BTH merged with Metropolitan-Vickers   of Trafford Park,  and  that company changed its name to AEI Associated Electrical Industries.    About the year 1968  GEC  made a takeover bid for AEI,   which succeeded.

mrs tenacious,   May I ask where you bought the writing desk from?

My guess  would be that the owner of the medal is probably now in their 90s.

Possibly the writing desk was disposed of in a house clearance,  by the children or relatives.   One could say that the items have been abandoned.

I bow to your superior knowledge on the subject, as the great Eric once said, I played all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order :-[
I had looked it up on Wikepedia but could not be bothered to write it all out ::)
In the past I have bought old football medals from the jeweller mentioned, the newspaper would be most interested I would imagine and with such an unusual name attached it may get a response.

I think I may have known the guy who owned that Jewellers around about 1970.

Is that Jewellers near a corner on one of the main shopping streets with a bank on the opposite corner?
