Samuell DIKES..
« on: Monday 25 October 10 01:30 BST (UK) »
Hi.
I need some advice...I'm trying to trace my DYKE tree and I've found a Samuel  Dykein Ludlow Shropshire in 1747 who had 8 children with his wife Ann.  I found a Samuell DIKE in Helpingham Lincolnshire who had 6 children, one of whom was named Samuel DIKES C: 1726 ...How can I find out if SAMUELL DIKE C; 1726 is the same man as SAMUEL DYKE in Ludlow Shrop. in 1747 married to Ann??
Also the surnames of his children seem to have changed...from his of DIKE to DIKES, DYKES
Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated
Many Thanks
Dave.....BC Canada

Hi Dave

Don't get hung up on spelling :)

There are six known signatures by the man known as William Shakespeare.  Each of them has a different spelling of the surname, including two on a single document (his will).  None of them uses the spelling SHAKESPEARE.  If the great man didn't care, what hope is there for the rest of us?

I have checked here http://www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/section.asp?catid=22905&docid=75498 but there is no trace of a will which might have been helpful.  It seems the one in Helpringham was a Labourer http://freereg.rootsweb.com/cgi/SearchResults.pl?RecordType=Baptisms&RecordID=5172224

There were DIKEs (choose your spelling) in both areas in the 1600s and probably earlier.

Turning your question on its head, could the Sam who married Ann CAP in Lincs in 1715 have been the one born in Shropshire in 1675?
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.
