re James Ellery & Elizabeth Birt (?)
« on: Tuesday 26 October 10 22:34 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Wonder if someone can help.
Trying to find more info (e.g. marriage and death, etc) of a James Ellery, son of a Dr John Ellery of Cranley, Surrey, by his 1st wife Sarah Hulse.
James was bap at Cranley 14 Jan. 1816 and apparently according to some Cranley correspondence "married a genteel and pretty girl and  trained as a chemist".  He apparently had a daughter Sarah Charlotte Ellery, bap. at Sheerness, Sheppey, co. Kent 25 March 1838.  I haven't seen the actual baptism of the daughter so don't know if it gives any additional info that could be of use. Sara Charlotte married late in life and her father James is called an M.D.
The 1851 census gives Sarah Charlotte living with her mother Elizabeth, now married to Richard Jerwood, solicitor, in London with some half-siblings. Also with them are Elizabeth's mother Charlotte Birt (born Sudbury, Bucks) and her dau. Maria Birt born Bucks. Mother Elizabeth was also born in Bucks. So I'm presuming James Ellery marr. an Eliza. Birt before 1838. Can't find anything more about James or the Birts.
Any additional help would be greatly appreciated.
I've posted this also on the Kent sight, in case!

Ok, so have you found the family on the 1841 census?

Of course, Sarah Charlotte's birth certificate could be quite useful but I assume that's not an option at the moment?

When/where was Sarah Charlotte's mother, Elizabeth supposedly born according to the census?

When/where was Maria BIRT born in Bucks?

Who were the JERWOOD children in the 1851 census ............... when/where  were they born and have you found baptisms for them?

Casalguidi :)

Hello Casalguidi,

Okay, I can't find Sarah Charlotte or her mother anywhere in the 1841 census. Tried every possible spellings of Ellery & jerwood.

Elizabeth was living with new husband Richard Jerwood in Islington in 1851 (HO/107/1502, schedule 108).  She was born in Buckingham and aged 34 in 1851 & also there were her mother Charlotte Burt aged 57 a widow and born in Sudbury, Bucks. Also sister Maria Burt born Buckingham and aged 34. Sarah C. was 13 and born in Sheerness, Kent.

Elizabeth's Sherwood children all born in islington were:
Elizabeth b. 1844 (no birth cert); Mary b. 16/8/1846; Tryphena b. 12/8/1848; Maria b. 25/3/1850; Richard Hereford b. 31/1/1852 & d. 25/11/1852.

Richard Jerwood is a widow in 1861 census, so Elizabeth must have married him about 1842-43, and died 1851 - 1861.
James Ellery, M.D. must have died between 1838 and about 1842ish. Can't find anything that looks like his death on FreeBMD, but he could have died anywhere in the south of England.
