Army barracks in Middlesex
« on: Thursday 28 October 10 15:42 BST (UK) »
Thomas Lloyd's profession is given as Sergt (living at Kings Mews) on the baptism certificate of my gggrandmother, Sarah Lloyd, and also at her sibling's baptism 2 years earlier. They were baptised in St Martin in the Fields in 1824 and 1822. When Sarah married in 1846, Thomas was a Drill Master. Was there an army barracks in this area that he might have been connected to? I know nothing else about Thomas yet, so this is probably a long shot!
Hoping for a break through!
Diane.

The old Royal Mews was known as Kings Mews, which is now the site of Trafalgar Square which of course is next door to St. Martins in the Fields. Believe he could have possibly been in one of the Guards Divisions. Not sure if in those days this was part of Middlesex.

Hi Diane

There were lots of barracks in central London mainly used by foot guards and cavalry units. You should check Findmypast to see if they have any records that match. Although you will probably need his place and year of birth given the common name.

Did he have any children born outside of London?

Ken

Thanks TLB. I don't know of any other children, Ken, as I said I thought this would be a longshot! Might have a look at Findmypast while I'm at it though.

Hi Diane

As well as the service records on FindMyPast they also have regimental BMDs, and often home births were recorded, and the index should give the regiment.
