I've found a g.g.grandfather in 1851 cens. N.K. is given
as birth county, but all others have 3 letters.
Thought it could be Norfolk but not sure.Can some one
please help?

   Here goes:
Canal basin HEREFORD 1851
Jacob Whitehouse  21 boatman N.K.
1978   93   315

  The only thing that makes sense to me is Norfolk,
as he is only a young lad could you find him on other census years.
The indexes are for Herefordshire.

Could N.K. stand for Not Known  ?

I've come across it in 1901 and also 1881 I think

Hi

One of my great grandfather's had a birth place of N.K. in the 1881 census and on the 1891 census it was given as Polesworth. I was just assuming that in 1881 he wasn't physically in the house to answer questions and it was put down as N.K. - Not Known. So I would have to agree with Chris

I have lots of N.K. - and it makes sense as "Not Known".  They were travelling potters are often recorded staying in guest houses.

Thanks to everyone for replying,as my family were boat
people and obviously travelled a lot, N.k.(not known)
is probably the answer.
                 Have seen an entry for one boatman who
was born  "in a tunnel"
