The Humes Migrate to Jamaica
« on: Friday 29 October 10 20:48 BST (UK) »
Can anyone please help me establish the link between the Hume/Homes of Scotland and the Humes of Jamaica (WI). I am told of Edward Hume, whose father (Arthur(?)) and Mother migrated to Jamaica from Scotland sometime in the late 19th Century. Edward was born in about 1876 in Jamaica, West Indies and died in there, age about 104.
Father: Arthur(?) Hume was born in Scotland, UK and died in Jamaica, WI.
Mother: Unknown-Scottish was born in Scotland, UK and died in Jamaica, WI.
Siblings: Samuel (Sammy) Hume & Patrick (Thomas) Hume (both probably born and died in Jamaica)
Spouse(s): Married in Jamaica to Isabella (Miss Bell) Grayson and someone also known as Miss-Epp

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi ljhume

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

If you use the LDS site http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=home, simply put in Robert Hume and below, for spouse, Eliza, and for location, Jamaica, you will see a number of births in Jamaica for their children, including a Samuel and a Patrick. Could this be the family?

A long living lot these Humes weren't they! This looks to be one of Edward's sons also pipping past the 100 yr mark www.jamaica-star.com/thestar/20060703/time/time3.html

The reference to Hanover in Jamaica for Edward's son's birth fits well with the Hanover birth references for the children of Robert and Eliza Hume.

Thank you very much MonicaLesl. Quite a lot to digest. I now have many more questions than I had before. Not least because I now find that the Humes went to Jamaica at least 100 years earlier than I thought. Intriguing, to say the least!!

There is much to unravel before I am able to say if the link between Scotland & Jamaica has been established.

Thanks again!

Yes, indeed; the Humes do tend to live on and on and on.

My Grandfather David Gideon Hume (Edward's son) was over 100 yrs when he died a few years ago. My dad Lycester Algreo Hume is going strong in his 80s and I myself am planning on living forever... lol

Thanks for your kind help

Monica,
I just checked out your second link... That IS my grandfather!!!!!!!
Thank you, I had not seen him for over 40 years and I regretted not being able to see and quiz him before he died.

I must say (tearfully) that seeing/reading about him and knowing that he was in such positive mood has made my day... nah year!! Thank you.

Best regards

Leslie
