Wills: Look-up please
« on: Monday 01 November 10 09:35 GMT (UK) »
Good morning,

If possible, I would be very grateful for information on documents pertaining to any of the following:

William HEDGES; Henry HEDGES; Charles HEDGES; Edmund HEDGES; John HEDGES; Ambrose HEDGES.

All these HEDGES were part of a dynasty of tailors in Faringdon - many of them living in London Street - between mid 1700's to late 1800's.

Many thanks in advance for help on this one.

Nick

I think you're going to need to post some individual dates and places of deaths here.

Also, the registers rarely give occupations.
RIP 1949-10th January 2013

Best Wishes,  Nick.

Yes, you're probably quite right ! Hadn't thought it through to the end properly.

William HEDGES died in Faringdon 1808, probably end 1807
John HEDGES died in Faringdon in March 1832
Edmund Hedges died in Faringdon in  3rdQ 1842
Ambrose HEDGES died in Faringdon on 4th December 1862
Charles HEDGES died in Faringdon 12th June 1868
Henry HEDGES died in Faringdon in 4thQ 1871

Hope that helps reduce things to better proportions.

Thanks for your comments.

Nick

You can check pre-1858 wills proved at Canterbury (the highest court at that time) on the National Archives Documents Online site.  If there are any, you can download them for £3.50 each.  If they left wills and were not proved at Canterbury then you may need took in the records of a lower ecclesiastical court.  Faringdon wills are now at Berkshire Record Office and there is an index.

From the National Calendar of Wills (1871):

HEDGES Charles. 13 March. The Will of Charles Hedges late of Great Faringdon in the County of Berks Tailor and Draper who died 12 June 1868 at Great Faringdon was proved at Oxford by Charles Cooper Hedges of Great Faringdon Tailor Alexander Augustus Hedges of 173 - Peckham - Park - road in the County of Surrey Merchant's Clerk and John Walter Hedges of Great Faringdon Grocer the Sons three of the Executors. Effects under £1500.

Can't see any probate / grant of administration for Ambrose or Henry.

Hi Nick,

These three are in the Berks record Office - if anyone can provide more detail on them?

Hedges, John  D/A3/5/55  1832 of Farringdon Tailon

1 Will, renunciation

Hedges, William the elder  D/A3/5/8  1808 of Farringdon Tailor

1 Will

Hedges, John  D/A3/5/48  1832 of Farigdon tailor

1 Bond

Hedges, Thomas  D/A3/3/61  1611 Of Faringdon, Husbandman

1 Will, inventory

The one of William would be especially interesting given the date.
