Matthew JOHNSTON
« on: Wednesday 03 November 10 16:25 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for my great x 3 grandfather, Matthew JOHNSTON, who is mentioned on his son William's marriage certificate dated 29th July 1857, in Lislooney Presbyterian Meeting House.
Matthew Johnston was a farmer , with the address "Parish of Tynan".

I know that his son William married Rachel Wright.
William & Rachel are both buried in St Mark's graveyard, Armagh.

In turn, they had a son, my great grandfather, Isaac JOhnston, who lived on the Mall in Armagh.  He was a carpenter and a carriage builder apparently.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
The Griffith's Valuation of 1863/64 has several entries for Matthew Johnston in the parish of Tynan. I think that they may all be for the same man. He rented a house, cornmill and some land in the townland of Rathrillick and more land in several other townlands.

Thanks a million for your help.
I live in France, and when I was home last, I looked in the graveyard in Lislooney Presbyterian but couldn't find any Johnston graves.
I don't quite know where to start trying to find Matthew J's death ....

Hi,
Are you aware that the 1901 and 1911 census are available on-line and that Isaac and his family are living in The Mall as you said? See www.census.nationalarchives.ie

Thank you again - how can I access the previous census - 1891, 1881, 1871 ?   Records office ?  I am surprised to see that Isaac was born in Co Tyrone - his father William was a labourer ...

Hi,
I am afraid that the 1901 census is the earliest that exists, earlier ones having been pulped during WW1 or lost in the Four Courts fire in Dublin in 1922.

When I google Matthew Johnston of Tynan, I keep getting Johnston's distillery in Middletown (2 Irish miles from Tynan !!)- created by a Matthew Johnston in 1831.  The date would be right.
Would anyone have any more information ?
Many thanks
