Scottish Census the Bigger Picture
« on: Thursday 04 November 10 19:11 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find a way to look up people in the surrounding homes/area of a person on 3 Scottish censuses.

Typically, I have found that there is only reference made to the person you are looking up and the immediate family and/or residents of that particular domicile.

This does not hold true in every case as sometimes when doing a look up you can page through the census "View others on page".

Can anyone help me as I would like to find person(s) living around a Margaret Smart (b. December 31, 1866 in Orkie, Kettle, Fife) in the 1771, 1881 and 1891 census.

Thank you,
Joe

Hi Joe

FreeCen enables you to tab through adjacent properties.  Unfortunately, Kettle has only been transcribed for 1841, as yet.

There were 16 Smarts there, in 1841.

Midlothian: Adam(s), Meikle/Muckle

Prestonpans: Bird, Inglis

1881 census shows Margaret working away from home as an outdoor worker at Freuchie Mill.  The farmer/miller was John Cuthbert.  There are other households on the same page but how close in reality they are to this household is hard to work out.  Two other households with a physical address of Freuchie Mill: widow Ann Greig and her unmarried son and daughter, and the Johnston family.

Can anyone find a Brodie family listed in the 1881 and 1891 census, that may have been living near Margaret?

Do you have any first names for these Brodies, please?

One Brodie family in Falkland in 1881 - different enumeration district though.  You will need to look at a map to establish how close the locations might be.

Falkland Wood
Alexander Brodie age 51 Coachman, Chelsea Pensioner, b Lethendry Perth
Catherine Brodie wife age 51 b Ireland
Catherine Brodie daughter 16 scolar b Jersey

What about Margaret's parents?  They are living at Lands End, Falkland in 1881, same enumeration district as Margaret, but some 9 pages before Freuchie Mill in the same book.

Can't help with the other census.  Sorry.
