Cahill - Doneraile Cork
« on: Monday 08 November 10 11:07 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to trace Cahill family from Doneraile.  There appears to be at least 2 sons Laurence b. 1814 Doneraile Charles b. 1816.  May also have been a 3rd son who had daughters Honoria b.1835 Doneraile Amy b.1837 and  Margaret b.1839 - included in censuses as cousins.

Laurence Cahill married Ellen Hanly abt 1840 probably Ireland but moved to London where he traded as a Master Japenner employing 4 men 1851 census.    He must have been in London by 1843 as his first son William was born Camberwell registered Jan-Mar 1843.   He had further 4 children Michael John Cahill b.1845 Camberwell Surrey d. Jun 1864, Ellen Marie Cahill b.1847 Camberwell Surrey, Lawrence Cahill b. 1848 d. 1897 & Daniel Cahill b.1850.  Laurence Cahill died 1865.

I think they were Roman Catholic as I have found no baptism records for any of the children.  Furthermore some of Ellen Cahill's children were educated at convent school and later one worked as a governess at a convent.

Charles Carhill married a Ruth Williams and also had children he was a commercial traveller.

It is the link to Ellen Hanly I am particularly interested as I believe she was possibly a niece of a Michael Hanly b. 1796 Sligo.  Any information regarding this family would be greatly appreciated.

Since posting this message whilst trawling the internet I came across a reference to a death announcement in the Cork examiner which indicates that Laurence Cahill's father was called John:

CAHILL, Laurence "son of late John"; ; Castletownroche COR IRL>London LND ENG; Cork Examiner (COR IRL); 1865-9-22; dja

Laurence Cahill died 19 September 1865 in a road accident.

Hi you posted a long time ago but Laurence Cahill was my great great great grandfather! he had a son called Laurence who then had a son called Laurence who was my grandmother's father. I have heard that he was killed outside the three Kings Pub in Hammersmith - knocked over by a Sarson's vinegar truck.

Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

Hi lovely to hear from you.  If you like  could pm you with my email.  Have done some research into Laurence's family and can give you access to what I have.  It is on my tree on Ancestry but not attached because I am not sure what the relationship connection between my Hanly 3xgr grandfather and the Cahill family was.  There are co-incidences which would seem to indicate some kind of family connection but nothing substantial.  Laurence Cahill was killed in a road accident and I think somewhere I found a newspaper report to that effect.
