Orston village
« on: Monday 08 November 10 15:13 GMT (UK) »
Anybody know much about the history of Orston village in the 18 - 19 centuries?

Several people in my tree, from various other villages in the area, seem to have met/married people from Orston in the late 18 - early 19th centuries. So I wonder if Orston had the main market in the area, or was a staging post, or the only place for miles around that had plenty of pubs - or maybe there was some other reason for it to be a focus for marraiges?

has anyone else found anything similar? Any ideas/theories/facts about this?

May have had a vicar who didn't ask too many questions about the degree of relationship between those about to be married. Were the marriages often between cousins?

No - it just seems to have been a meeting place!

Just a thought, Orston isn't too far from the Vale of Belvoir so could it have had something to do with the hunt?

Revisiting my tree - the Orston marraiges are all between local girls and men from surrounding villages; I think it must be something to do with work or trade.

So then it does sound like a hiring fair or of course the Belvoir Hunt.
