James Gartland
« on: Thursday 11 November 10 23:33 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
This is the first of my ancestors who was born in what is now the Republic of Ireland so I would appreciate some guidance on how to verify his birth details.

Family lore says James Gartland was born in Co. Cavan, lived at some stage in Tandragee, Co. Armagh and settled finally in Armagh City. He died there in 1959.

My research so far gives a lot of conflicting facts about where and when he was born, and his father's name.

1901 Census http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Armagh/South_Ward/Charter_School_Lane/1010802/
born c. 1889 Co Monaghan  ??? , father Peter

1911 Census http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Armagh/Tanderagee_Urban/Mill_Row/332697/
born c. 1888 Co Cavan, father deceased

1916 Marriage Cert
born c. 1886, father James

My Mum says
born 1892 Co Cavan, but she doesn't know where she got this info from.

Using the LDS pilot site I have found 5 James Gartlands that may be mine:
James Gartlandy  1887 Kells (Cavan/Meath)
James Gartlan 1890 Bailieborough (Cavan)
James Gartlan 1888 Carrickmacross (Monaghan)
James Gartlan 1890 Carrickmacross (Monaghan)
Peter James Gartlan 1886 Carrickmacross (Monaghan).

What is the best way for me to proceed?

Thanks in advance,
Kevin

Thanks very much for such a quick reply!  :)  I had missed that one, but my gut feeling is the censuses I have are the right ones.
The 1911 because I was aware of the Tandragee link, and my gt-grandfather was indeed a printer.
The 1901 because the names and ages match up fairly well. Also, none of them were born in Co. Armagh. Not sure what to make of Peter though...  ???

Hmmm, I'm wondering if it would be worthwhile ordering the 4 Euro research certificates for the 5 possibles I've found, and see if any of them have a father Peter or James and a mother Sarah..... ???

Would the research certificates give that info? I am a bit confused.  ???
