Simeon Robinson - Ireland to Wolverhampton in the 1820s

Hi all,

I'm trying to trace the Irish ancestry of Simeon Robinson who was born in Ireland around 1786. He married a Mary (maiden name unknown) and had at least one known child, Susannah, born in Dublin in 1822. He attended a wedding (as a witness) of a George Robinson to Mary Baggott in Wolverhampton in 1828 as did a John Biddulph. John was also a witness at the marriage of Susannah to William Bates Jones in 1838, so may also have been family.

In 1841 Simeon was living with Mary in Wolverhampton (Brickkiln Street) and then alone 1851 (Halletts Row) where he was listed as a 'journeyman locksmith'. He died in April of that year in the workhouse and was buried in Merridale cemetery.

I know the Irish records can be a little tricky so I'd be grateful for any advice on taking Simeon's line back.

To start any sort of search you need to know the family religion and a location - i.e. parish town or townland, so you can check what records are available. Not all parishes have records back to the 1700s.

You can search details for many Dublin city parishes at : www.irishgenealogy.ie   I had a quick look but didnt see any mentioning Simeon.

Thanks Shane, I'll have a look at the Dublin records as Susannah was specifically listed in later UK censuses as being born there, but it's entirely possible that her parents came from outside of the city.  As far as I know they were Protestant as Susannah married at a CofE in Wolverhampton.  :O)

found someone with the same occupation and a similar name in an 1824 directory (Pigot's) under the section for "Locksmiths & Bell Hangers" :

  Simon Robinson, 2 Bow lane (Dublin)

Hi Retrospectory,

with regard to your mention of the witness in your initial enquiry, I think that you will find that John Biddulph witnessed very many of the marriages that took place at St Peter's Collegiate Church in Wolverhampton around that period so it is unlikely to signify any family attachment.  he may have been a church warden or otherwise worked in or around the church.
