Samuel Davies
« on: Saturday 13 November 10 00:23 GMT (UK) »
I can find Samuel's marriage record to Frances Elizabeth Murray, (2/7/1822 St Andrew's, Holborn) and it is witnessed by Ebenezer Davies and William Davies. (Also witnessed by Frances Jones, bride's mother, and Mary Reacey). I have not been able to find a birth record for Samuel, but am wondering if either Ebenezer or William is Samuel's father? Approximate birth date and place (1801, Westminster) have been obtained from census records. Samuel was a law stationer, and so was Ebenezer, and Samuel's son, Alfred Christopher Davies. Any help to trace Samuel's origins would be very much appreciated, please.  Regards, nutmeg138

Being from Oz, I have no clear understanding of the lines drawn between Sussex, Middlesex and Essex, and also, although I think the Davies family was mostly from London, I don't KNOW that for a fact. Sorry if the question is not for you. Thanks for the reply. nutmeg

Hi nutmeg138,
It is very difficult to pinpoint his Christening unfortunately.
Have you tried Familysearch Pilot ?.

Re Ebenezer you say he was a Law Stationer also.
When was he born according to the Census you have for him?
If he was close in age to Samuel this may be of interest;

England/Wales Non Conformist Records Indexes (RG4-8)
SAMUEL Davies;
Birth 21 January 1802, Cripplegate, London to SAMUEL and SARAH Davies
EBENEZER Davis:
Birth 29 March 1800, Cripplegate, London to same Parents

Other possible Children to Sam/Sarah;
MARY, 28 July 1797
JOSIAH HOSKEN, 20 July 1799
SARAH, 19 August 1800
HEPZIBAH, 18 Sept 1808
SOPHIA, 03 March 1810

All from Familysearch Pilot

Trish :)

Thanks Trish, I had tried FamilySearch pilot, putting in 'Samuel Davies, any event 1790-1850 in London, England United Kingdom. What I received from that search was Samuel's marriage records, his children's births or christenings. Nothing on Samuel's birth, so am wondering what info you put into the search engine? I would love to try it.
Re Ebenezer, I have his birth 27/11/1788, christening St Clement Danes, Westminster, parents William Davies and Mary Morris. 2 Marriages, 1/1/1821 St A Holborn to Susan Merrick; 11/11/1845 St A Holborn to Mary Bryers (aged 49 and father John Thomas - his surname - and Ebenezer, burial 20/12/1846, Highgate cemetery, Pancras. All this from Ancestry.com. Unfortunately, no census or other common records to tie Ebenezer and Samuel together except Sam's marriage cert. I do enjoy searching records for my ancestors, but sometimes it's all just too confusing. Thanks for your efforts, nutmeg138.

Hi Trish, I tried Family search Pilot search and found all but Ebenezer for Samuel and Sarah Davies.  I note you give their birth address as Cripplegate, whereas the five other names you gave me were born or baptised a St Saviour's, Southwark (first three) or Newington, Surrey (Hepzibah and Sophia). Is this possible considering Samuel and Ebenezer's births at Cripplegate?
There were several marriages for Samuel/Sarah, but one Samuel/Sarah Holder, 25/3/1792, St Michael's, Crooked Lane, London England or Samuel/Sarah Sims 25/12/1807 at St Clement Danes. I thought this was a bit late, and also all these people have the surname Davis, rather than Davies. I know spellings are not always a guide, but would like your thoughts, please.
I wish I could meet them all and explain how hard it is when they keep using the same christian names! Regards, Meg
