'Birds Nest' Charitable Institution, Kingstown
« on: Wednesday 17 November 10 15:54 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I have found out from the 1911 Ireland Census that two of my ancestors were at an Orphanage called Birds Nest, in York Road, Kingstown/Dun Laoghaire. They were aged 8 and 13 yrs.  They were not orphans as their mother was alive.  However, their father may have died in about 1906 and perhaps the mother could not cope as there were other children also.  Does anyone know if this school still exists under that name?
Many thanks
Carol

I think the building is now used as offices

See :

 Google Street View

 OSI Maps
(press 8, or select the 25" option to vew an c1890s map showing the building.)

If you google bird's nest kingstown or bird's nest Dun Laoghaire you will see quite a few details on the orphanage.

Hello Shane

Many thanks indeed for your reply about Birds Nest and for the map and photo references.  I've looked at these now and will google some information about the school and hopefully will visit York Road next time I'm in the area.  You have been most helpful, thanks again.

Regards, Carol

I, too, had relatives in the Birds Nest, and corresponded with the SMYLY Trust last year.  They were extremely helpful and I finished up with pages of very valuable and revealing info which helped break down a brick wall and reveal a family secret hidden for over 100 years.

Do contact them and be patient for their records are not held on site.  Some strict rules have to be adhered to, re data protection.

Best of luck.
