Genealogy Subscription Sites - what one is the best for irish records
« on: Wednesday 17 November 10 16:26 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I'm thinking of subscribing to one of the genealogy sites. Can someone please let me know which
sites are the best to subscribed to for irish records i.e. Ancestry, irish times etc.

Some sites claim to have certain irish records but when you join you find out that really they do not
have a lot of irish content.

Much obliged

no simple answer I'm afraid... depends on the timeframe and which county, type of details etc you are interested in.

An index to Civil records is available (free) on familysearch, the census details are also free. Many parish records for Dublin, Cork, Kerry and Carlow are available (free) on www.irishgenealogy.ie

see : Introduction to Irish Records

Ancestry has almost no Irish Records..

I see from your profile that you are based in Ireland.. if you are close to Dublin, it might be easier to go straight to the sources for the records - i.e.

National Library - RC records, Newspaper Archives, Tithe records etc
Representative Church Body Library - CofI records
 National Archives

etc

Thanks Shane
Again you have been most helpful. Thank you
I have used all the free resources you mentioned and others. (family members info and Im always asking for more details)
Due to work commitments can't get to dublin. My research in some areas of family is pre 1850 some not. I have been doing this for the last 10 yrs. Sometimes you find something like a small detail and it opens up more avenues. Hopefully irish genealogy will update the rest of their RC records soon.
Again my research is so vast, military, emigration, 1798 history, and on some relatives info is nothing to go on.
Regards
