Hamilton/Cary marriage query
« on: Thursday 06 May 10 12:27 BST (UK) »
I obtained a marriage record from IFHF which was very sketchy, basically the names of the two parties, the date of the marriage and the place.  There was no present address for either parties or parents.  However, whilst searching on the Donegal site run through rootsweb (truly brilliant with an incredibly amount of information) I came across the record of the marriage listed under PRONI Deputy Keeper's Report.  The information gave me a reference but also included what appears to be the references of the parishes/townland for each - in one it was Ramelton and the other Donagh.  Is the two records different or will it be a poor description on the IFHF site.  I have emailed PRONI giving the referene on the Report and requesting information as to how to get the entry but as yet have not had a reply. Does anyone know whether it would be worth spending further money on another entry.

Many thanks for any help.

I am not familiar with any Donegal records on the IFHF database, but records I've checked for other counties (Dublin & Wicklow) were complete transcriptions of the original parish records. The original  records can be very sketchy depending on the timeframe and individual parish. For example my own ancestors married in Wicklow on 1849, and the only details recorded in the register are the date, the names of the bride, groom and witnesses, another marriage record from a parish in North County Dublin around the same time included even more details than a civil cert - including both mother & fathers, addresses for everyone (including witnesses)

I have heard that for some counties the transcripts they hold may not include the full details.

Thanks for replying so quickly.  On IFHF The marriage was between Charles Hamilton and Mary Cary.  Date of the marriage is 20 Jan 1805 Tullyaughnish Co Donegal.  Parents name merely Hamilton and Cary.  By address is Ng (presumably not given.  Yet on the PRONI there under Hamilton the reference is:

HAMILTON  Charles Ramelton / Don m. Mary Ann Cary c1805 T 2799add

under Cary;

CARY   Mary Ann Donagh / Don m. Charles Hamilton c1805 T 2799add

To add more information Mary Ann Hamilton is buried in Tullyaughnish in 1814 wife of C Hamilton.   She is in the same grave as Charles Hamilton of Fort Stewart and James Hamilton of Fort Stewart.

They certainly appear to be recording the same event but the record at Proni does appear to have more information.

Regards

Do you know what religion? Early Presbyterian marriage records usually only record date, groom, bride and if you are very lucky townlands might be included.

Sorry Aghadowey should have mentioned it, they were Church of Ireland and that is on the record I received from IFHF.
