Tracing my family's shops in Brighton. Help please.
« on: Friday 19 November 10 19:16 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone,

I am trying to trace where  my granfather's shops were situated in Brighton. His name was Frederick Charles DAVIS. He traded in Brighton during the late 20s and through the 30s. I believe he had a shop in Kensington Garden, but have been told there were others. At least two of his sons, Walter Stanley Davis, and Charles Frederick  also ran shops in Brighton One in Gloucester Road and another I think in Gardener Street.  Also Edward Street . Walter married Barbara Gillow who was involved with the furniture business. I would dearly like to know where my family lived and traded in Brighton. My father's name was Philip Thomas Cole Davis, he was born in 1905 in Edmonton, London.

Frederick had others sons who may have ran shops there including William and Arthur.

Thank you, Sara.

hello
you may be aware that gillow (waring&gillow) were famous furniture makers/traders and ironically i worked for w&g in london west end back in the late 60's however my reminising (spelling might be dodgy) does not help you so post office directories (kelly's etc) are excellent reference media and i believe that they are kept in local library archives (ie brighton/sussex area) its worth a bash. good luck. tony.

Hi Tony, thank you for your reply. Funnily enough Walter's sister Winifed married another Gillow the same year. I did know about the family, I was hoping that it would jog someones memory if I mentioned it.
Best wishes, Sara.
