Emigrants from Birmingham to Connecticut
« on: Monday 11 April 05 20:51 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Would anyone know where the most likely ports for emigrants to USA from Birmingham - I assume Liverpool but has anyone any knowledge on general trends. The family I seek were probably working class - large number of mixed sex jewellery trade although they might have gone in smaller numbers family story would tend to assume went as a group of 13 in 1891.

Similarly I believe that some of this family ended in New London, Connecticut - would that mean they landed in Boston or would they have gone through New York or other.

As an aside - researching this family has not always revealed the most obvious of behaviour.

Any thoughts gratefully appreciated.

Regards, Mark

Hi Mark

I don't know for sure but I would guess Liverpool to New York
depending on whether they had assisted passages or not..!
Ellis Island didn't start for another year or so after  ( or when you think  ) - they  left..
You might try ships going to Sag Harbour - the computations are endless of course  - also they could have gone through Canada

NARA -  which is the American Nation Archives has some good ideas Also the Merseyside Maritime museum has packets of info -  but you can't get them on-line -  you have to write for them -  but I think one of my favourite sites is

lots of info to navigate but you might get inspired ... have fun with it - but don't start til you have some free time - it gets addictive !!

Hope that helps some!

Hello Mark

You seem to be researching the Sanders family.  Charles Herbert Sanders  born 1862; lived 102 Church Lane, Aston Manor in 1901 is my grandfather.  Could you be related to him too?

I am interested in the Sanders family (jewellers) who went to America.  Perhaps we are researching the same family?

Hi,

My Charles Herbert was born 31 Jan 1861 baptised 21 Sep 1862 St Paul Birmingham son of Thomas and Mary nee Smith - I was under the impression that Charles H went to US in 1890s although not entirely sure.

My great grandfather was Charles' elder brother - all seem to be Jewellers/ Saw piercers / allied trades but I have been in contact with other Sanders jewellers from Brum sadly not related -  I also seem to recall there were several of that name in BMD for Brum. Hope there is a linkas I have managed to contact several descendants of Charles' siblings.

Best Regards, Mark
