local knowledge delanys, brophys castletown area
« on: Saturday 20 November 10 21:26 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for family relationships around the castletown offerlane parish area in the early 1800's. In griffiths it shows andrew brophy, margaret delany, denis delany at knockacollar with edward, john and thomas delany also knockacollar but separate holding. Is anyone able to tell me what was at knockacollar in the 1850's, was it a farm or a mine or mill?
i am descended from eliza brophy and patrick delany who lived at knockacollar and old borris castletown.  I am hoping someone will have a connection to any one of these people  who can shed light on family ties.  I don't know if Eliza was daughter, sister or cousin of Andrew.  Same with Patrick.   Local Parish priest told me (via email) that andrew and anne had 8 children at knockacollar but I'm not sure if it was andrew brophy or andrew delany as andrew delany was living there at 1901 census, no sign of others.
does anyone know where they would have been buried.  Camross or castletown.
there were also roger, richard brophy living at castletown at the time,  were they related.
hoping someone can shed some light as it is my biggest brickwall.

thanks Jack for all your work,  i just need to assimilate it all and see if any of them fit, it's a great way to learn geography.

I notice some of the elderly men are described as single, I looked up on IHIf site for Patrick Delany death and found one that would fit in Knockbrack but he was described as single also.  Would a widower be described as single back then?  Otherwise I can find no trace of Patt unless he moved miles away.
Am I right in thinking that all deaths were recorded in civil records, even catholics and therefore should be in IFHF records after the 1860's unless they immigrated?
thanks again

Yes, a lot of 'widowers' are recorded as single, thus that causes confusion when searching. Irish Civil Registrations began in 1864 and anything before that might be held by a local Parish priest. But that can also be a problem!!
I'm going to post the Brophy/Delaney records for Mountrath, as there are quite a few interred there, and might match up further along, and might be of us to some other searchers in Laois.
I'll put the Brophy here and Delaney on an other post as there are so many.

Sorry to take to long to get back, and a huge thank you for all your hard work.  I think I need to get an historical  map of the local area and pin people on it so I can follow it better.  I've just been using the map on griffiths site.

I  am pretty sure my Patrick and Eliza lived in Old Borris Castletown,  Do you know how I would  find out his occupation, i have googled everything i can think of but with no luck, I emailed the library to see if they had any relevant books on the subject but got no reply.  Dr Jane Lyons site had occupations for Mountrath township but not Castletown.  I know there was a mill there and a police barracks but otherwise I don't know what other industry would have been there.  Your ideas would be appreciated, I'm running on empty.
