This may be a naive question, but todate I have got all my certificates via the GRO.When you visit a Local Registry Office can you view the complete certificates and then order,or do you view just the index and order.

The public are not allowed to see the certificates in a local
Register
Office. Information can only be released in the form of certificates issued by the registrars.

Local Register Offices are required by law to hold indexes to their registers. You can carry out a General Search of the indexes yourself at the office. The fee for a General Search is £18.00. The indexes, but not the actual registers can be searched for up to six consecutive hours within the opening hours of the Office. You usually must make an appointment.

The Indexes are purely for the local office and use a different reference system to that of the GRO Indexes, which mean nothing to a local office.

I have found that staff at local offices are most obliging and whilst not allowed to show you the certificate have been known to do something else while you look.
